After-School Programs

Beyond the Bell Music and Entertainment Education believes in the importance and benefits of music education at an early age. Students grades 3 - 8 are offered the opportunity to learn music theory and musicianship while learning how to play an instruments. New students are able to learn Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Violin or Percussion while more advanced students are also given the opportunity to play Saxophone, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Viola, Cell and Double Bass. 

The program is free of charge to all LAUSD students, grades 3 - 8. Classes normally start on the third week of each Fall and Spring semester and enrollment  is open during the first two weeks of classes. All student are issued an instrument for class and home use.

Jazz Big Band

The ensemble was created in the Spring of 2010 to represent the Los Angeles School District, its students, and teachers in the Annual Playboy Jazz Festival held at the Hollywood Bowl. The ensemble has also performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival Press Release Event, The Centreal Avenue Jazz Festival, and various district events. 

Student audition for limited chairs in the ensemble. Students are recommended by their home school program teachers. The instrumentation of the group consist of, but not limited to, Alto and Tenor Saxophones, Trombones, Trumpets, Drum Set, Bass (electric and/or acoustic), guitar and Vocals.

Beyond the Bell Music and Entertainment Education in partnership with KJZZ, and the Jazz Educator's Network presented Los Angeles' first Jazz Flash Mob at Union Station on April 30th, 2014, International Jazz Day. Over 50 student and professional musicians, such as Ndugu Chancler, fill the halls of the station with Kenny Burrell's Chitlins Con Carne.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the LAUSD Band and Drill Team Championships. The event was designed to provide an avenue for LAUSD high school and drills to exhibit their yearly field show that includes music, dance, and pageantry. Held at the beautiful East Los Angeles Community College athletics stadium and judged by the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA), 35 high school marching bands and auxiliary units compete in 6 divisions over the course of the day.
